The SOCAN Songwriting Prize honours the best music created by Canadian songwriters.
Here’s how it works. Two independent panels of Canadian music scene experts – completely unaffiliated with SOCAN – nominate songs that they believe represent the most creative and artistic work by emerging songwriters in Canada over the past year. One panel nominates English songs and the other nominates French songs. Songwriters or their representatives do not submit songs for consideration, and all genres of music are eligible.
Each panel listens to all the submitted songs and individually votes for their top seven based on a ranking system. The 10 songs that receive the most votes become the 10 finalists in each of the English and French categories. The short lists are then announced here and public voting for the winner takes place for two weeks.
Once the voting period ends and the votes are tabulated, the winning English & French songwriter(s) will each receive $10,000 in cash, a Yamaha PSR-S975 keyboard, and a $500 gift card from Long & McQuade.
